I suggest that if one is to make assumptions about the effects of any illicit drug that they must first understand the effect that said drug has on any individual. Research has been done on marijuana and its effects on not only a person’s motor function but also on its long term affects on their individual personalities and mental well being. In a study conducted by Buckner et al in 2010 they did find that;

… among students who reported using marijuana 5 times or more in the past year, 40.1% had difficulty concentrating after using…and students who use marijuana in addition to alcohol (although not necessarily at the same time) are more likely to perform poorly on tests, miss class, and experience memory loss than students who only use alcohol (Rhodes, Peters, Perrino, & Bryant, 2008; Shillington & Clapp, 2001).

In fact, marijuana use appears related to lower academic performance. SAT scores have been shown to be at least 50 points lower among college students who smoked marijuana every day compared to marijuana users who have never used marijuana more than 10 times in one month (Kouri et al., 1995).

Marijuana use and marijuana-related problems among college students are related to social anxiety (Buckner, Bonn-Miller, Zvolensky, & Schmidt, 2007; Buckner, Mallott, Schmidt, & Taylor, 2006; Buckner & Schmidt, 2008, 2009; Buckner, Schmidt, Bobadilla, & Taylor, 2006), depression (Buckner, Keough, & Schmidt, 2007), and schizotypal personality traits (Dumas et al., 2002). Marijuana use (regardless of whether infrequent or frequent) was associated with greater mental health problems (anxiety, depression, hostility, interpersonal sensitivity, paranoia, psychoticism).

Please consider this in any further discussions on this board on whether the legalization of said drug should be completed as its effects are of the type that any normal individual would not want to be readily available at their local Kwik-E-Mart along side of alcohol which does nothing but makes the effects even worse. This is empirical research as reported in a peer reviewed academic journal. Therefore the research is sound as apposed to any individuals biased observations and opinion.

Also, in the matter of immigration laws and ones ability to conduct their business anywhere in the world…well they can so long as they do it legally. Immigration is an easily obtained goal for anybody wishing to come to the United States so long as it is done legally. Don’t forget that trade agreements like NAFTA does supply the ability for any business man to trade with any other country so long as it is done legally. We cannot as a nation afford to open our borders though and not monitor the traffic to and fro. This would open a wide whole in our nation’s security. You do know what security is don’t you? It’s what we in corrections eat, breath and preach everyday.

Go to the ACA website and see if there are any resources that may help answer your question. When it comes to inmate programming I would get with a local state facility and see if they would let you participate in some of their programs. This will give you a better understanding of what the inmates may need to know before they are incarcerated. This happens all the time between our facility and the local county jail.

Sniper, check the numbers on Dayton and Hocking. They cut the population by half and are sending them your way eventually with a total of 900. Look at all the instiutions with populations under 1000 and see what the cost per inmate per day is. Whats that tell you?

When dealing with ones own self worth you have reevaluate your situation in your profession and home life. You asked what you can do to re-establish your own moral. I am assuming that you mean your own ehtical beliefs based on personal experiance and department policy based on the way you worded your question. To this, the problem with basing your situation on what your departments administration is doing is not best to your situation. Whatever the Sheriff is doing that you do not personally like I am sure has validity. However, is what he is doing something that could be considered unlawful, against policy, against ethical standards or is it just decisions that you do not agree with? So long as it does not effect your personaly you should step back from the situation and re-align yourself to doing exactly what you were hired for and you can find that in your basic position description.

Unfortunately for you it sounds as though you are suffering from job burnout. This is a normal condition that plenty of people find themselves going through. Situations arise where they do not agree with the way policy or rules are carried out. Not only with staff but with inmates also. By even posting what you have here tells me that you have already identified that you are in this situation. If you feel that you are in a state of depression or are not even sure maybe its time to go talk with someone.

Either way the best thing you can do is what is good for you. If you can figure out why you even go to work somedays and do not enjoy the job like you used to then an in depth look into your personal goals are in order for the next year. Don’t make your life about your job, however, do not deprive yourself of a job well done.

First off, don’t let Shakey scare you away from the job. Just because Kasick is running his mouth before he gets into office does’nt mean he will follow through with any of his rants. However, do keep that in mind as you do go through the process so there is no guarentees.

Congratulations on your CJ degree. It is a good program and you should be proud of what you have accomplished. Most of your older generation officers do not hold degrees to high standards and usually downplay them. However, your degree is one step forward than most have coming into this field. This gives you a leg up as you go through the academy and into the institution that you are assigned. Remember though that what you learn in a classroom is a lot different from the real life experiance you will encounter especially if you go through one of the more dangerous institutions like ManCi, LeCi and so forth.

When you go into your interview just remember all that you have learned in college and be honest in your answers. The majority of the interviewers you will encounter have started as Officers and worked their way to the position they hold now. This means they can tell when someone is not being forthrite with them.

Once you get in do continue your nursing program if you already started it. Once you get hired as a nurse you will be able to carry your state seniority with you.
