Topic: The Club House / Privitazation of some of Ohios' prisons I’ve had some really crappy jobs in my life, but I’ve never seen morale as low as it is right now. I suspect the biggest issue is “not knowing what’s going to happen.” |

Topic: The Club House / 12 Hour Shifts Ohio is now talking about going to 12.5 hour shifts. That will be GREAT for someone working the day shift, but it will be a looooooong night for those on the PM shift. |

Topic: A Broader View / Prison & Slavery - A Surprising Comparison 1. Prisoners should work on any basis they and their employer agree to. They might need a union, too. In my experience prisoners are not very receptive to performing manual labor, even if it’s dusting ledges or emptying office trash cans. I regularly hear “I was sent here to do time, not to mop floors” and “I never did anything on the outside except count money.” 2. To reduce the prison population, corporal punishment should be used to discourage and punish crime. Corporal punishment would be a great vehicle to hire sadists who would happily inflict the punishment, but it isn’t much of a deterrent because it comes after the fact. Nobody expects to be caught and they aren’t concerned with the punishment for those who do get caught. 3. Probationes and parolees can be made to wear color-coded metal collars in lieu of incarceration. I read and understand the words but don’t understand the purpose color-coded collars. Unless, of course, they’re filled with some type of explosive. You’re trolling, aren’t you? |

Topic: Security Central / A question about cellphones We aren’t allowed to carry cells or BB’s and rightfully so. I might be having a brain fart here, but what are BB’s? (D"OH! It struck me as I was typing….. BlackBerry phones?) |

Topic: Health & Wellness / Controlling diabetes He RevRed. Welcome to the zoo. Restricting what an inmate can purchase at commissary will certainly keep him from buying certain things, but how do you control what his buddy buys for him? |

Topic: Security Central / Pat Down Gloves I can’t improve on Mick’s response. I normally wear latex gloves when doing individual pats or area searches. They are a real pain in the summer, though, because my hands sweat so bad. I’ve never found a good way to get around that, but prefer wrinkly, prune looking hands to the alternative. In a pinch, such as patting down during chow, the food service prep gloves are better than nothing. |

Topic: The Club House / Privitazation of some of Ohios' prisons Mudflap I have heard that was one of the cost saving ideas they came up with. I also did hear that they would try it at 5-6 prisons to see if it helps and works RiCI was the only one I heard was supposed to try it I have not heard any other names Thanks for getting me on the right page. Looks like it’s simply an idea the DRC is looking at and not etched in concrete yet. I’d welcome a 12 hour shift. Does anyone reading this right now work a 12 hour shift? |

Topic: The Club House / Privitazation of some of Ohios' prisons I just talked to a union rep and the only info he got was from a e-mail he received and that it envovled 6 institutions and that RiCI was one of them and has not heard anything else since. Yep, I went back through my e-mails and that’s where it was. Thanks, man. If I had not shown that to another CO who remembered seeing it, I would have thought I only imagined reading it. |

Topic: The Club House / I have a Question Welcome to the zoo, Trichelle. Mick’s right about checking with whatever entity you’re interested in. City, county and state are all different, and some cities (or counties) are more strict than others. So herer’s my two cents: If you are truly interested in a career in Corrections, don’t give up until after you’re told “no” and even then don’t stop unless you’re told “don’t come back.” You might even learn you will qualify after a certain period of time after the conviction. The main thing to remember is to never neglect to bring it up. You MIGHT be turned down because of it, but you WILL be let go when they find out you lied about it, and the reason you were let go will follow you around for the rest of your career. Come back and let us know what happens, eh? |

Topic: The Club House / Privitazation of some of Ohios' prisons Shakey (or Comfortably or anyone), I’d read SOMEWHERE about the 12 hour shift thing but don’t have any clue where and can’t find anything on the internet. I thought it might have been in the news clips but don’t see it there. Can you provide a link? |

Topic: Security Central / A question about cellphones With us if they are caught with one they can get up to an extra 5 yrs on their sentence. WOW! Cell phones are going at $1500 a piece in our Prisons. Anybody have an idea what a cell phone will go for in other institutions? |

Topic: The Club House / Help Me With A Question Not necessarily “just a matter of time,” Smaj. I agree that if the s*it truly hits the fan someone with your experience will simply react, but for the average run of the mill altercation they won’t be in “panic mode” and will react accordingly. |
