We actually had a big Union Rep at our place tell us during the contract voting period. “Just be glad you have a job,. my neighbors are laid off.” Not we did our best, or yeah it sucks but it’s the best we could muster. It was “if we vote it down, it’s gonna be WAAAAAYYYY worse.” I’ve never seen a union that continually gave and gave and gave, without gaining anything in return. Unions aren’t supposed to give up benefits like this EVERY contract. This union is a joke. We need to go the route the Pennsylvania C/O’s went and drop AFSCME/OCSEA, and start our own, or go with someone else.

Shakey, that is why we will be working for free 3.076 hours a pay period. The union sold us down the river, they did not want to fight for us, and this was the only way for them not to get hurt themselves. They even figured a way to get more $$ for themselves by making Interims dues paying union members. I would have rather taken a pay cut and make them suffer also. Then maybe in 3 years they would have fought for us a little harder.

I also thought it was funny how during the election and contract negotiations the union shut down the forum. I guess they did not want people sharing their thoughts with others. Socialism at its best, Obama must be proud of Eddie Parks.

OCSEA said they will not start up the forum again. They said something about the cost and not having a network guy to mess it. But I think it has a alot to do with the election of Obama. There was a lot of hatered be spewed forth from that with the big Orange Crusher leading the pack. Being that our Union back Obama, they didn’t want to see how a lot of the Union members despised that stand. You know how people get, don’t like what’s being said so they take their ball and go home. I for one don’t buy into the fact that our union hasn’t the funds, look at it this way, we the members got a 3% pay reduction from hours not wages, Union dues are based on wages so they didn’t loss nothing because they still get the same dues amount as before.

Shakey, the conduct reports and incident reports are cake on the system. The Incident reports are easier, but the conduct reports aren’t all that hard either. We’ve been using them for about 3 years now here at LORCI. No big problems with it yet. What’s up with the OCSEA forum? Ever coming back? Maybe they got scared of people talking about dumping them and starting our own union….

My jail converted to “electronic logs” approximately 3 years ago. At first the officers rejected the idea but eventually embraced it. After a few months, many of the officers who hated the idea now love it. They no longer need to write the entire entry every time because the electronic log has multiple prewritten entries. For example, instead of typing “Headcount conducted” each time, you simply click the entry and it is automatically entered into your electronic log. You can type a brief note after the entry if you wish, but most of the time it is not necessary.

If we lose power or need routine maintenance on the datebase, we simply use the old manual log books which we keep on post at all times. Once the system is back online, we enter an electronic entry explaining what happened and that a manual log was used. That way, we will know to refer to the book for the missing entries in the event something happens. We do not need to enter the manual entries into the electronic log. My jail employs nearly 1,100 correctional staff with nearly 4,100 inmates. Every post has a computer and electronic log. The only down side is the newer officers are not trained properly on how to enter the log entries manually. Also, you must be on time with your entries because the date and time is electronically “stamped” in your log book.

We haven’t started using the computers yet. As may be common all over the world, we don’t always have forms available. So when we’re seeking some form to fill out (whether it’s a ticket, an overtime sheet, or whatever) we’re told that we can get them off the computer. But few of us have access to a printer to get a form ‘coz the system isn’t fully set up yet. Does everyone who is now using the computer for logbooks have printer access?

We just started using our computers Sunday 5/2/09 at a RiCI here in Ohio. We have been training for the use of it for a while, so far it’s not that bad. But it looks like a bear now that conduct and incident reports are to be done on it also.

If something happens that makes you guys keep the log in longhand, does anyone transfer the log into the computer system afterwards?

Mudflap, we have a emergency logbook (the old hand written one) incase something malfunctions on the computer we switch to that, but otherwise, we just use the electronic one here at LORCI

We keep them in the logbooks, and in the computer. A redundant system. Why I have absolutely no idea. But it works for us.

No no routine maintenance times that I have seen. Once in awhile you hit a glitch where it bombs out on you, but you just close it and open it back up and it’s fine. Other than the computer itself crashing, breaking or malfunctioning for some reason, it’s been very successful and the logbook program itself seems pretty solid.

10-4 on the electronic logbooks. That brings up another question…. does the system go down now and again for routine maintenance, and if so what do you guys do during that time?

Certainly there are other issues that I haven’t thought of yet. Are there other off-the-wall problems you know of?

I used a bunch of logs to build a cabin last weekend, does this count in this discussion???

We’re in the process of converting how we keep our logs. We’re still keeping them by hand in a bound book, but “sometime down the road” we’ll be keeping them on computer. Some of our posts have computers set up and some don’t, and we won’t make the switch until the entire institution is set up.

I don’t have a problem keeping logs on the computer and ain’t complaining about it, but I’m curious:

How many of you still keep logs in long hand and how many keep them on computer?
