I would say that you should continue like you have been. You are already on the right track of being sensitive to his job. Just understand that his job is a little different than the normal 9-5 where he probably deals with things in the institution that a normal 9-5 job doesn’t have to deal with. Just by you understanding that would be showing him support. Prisons are high stress environments so after work if he wants to vent, listen, if not, don’t push the issue. Like the person who previously posted, be patient because the job has odd hours and overtime. That can be an adjustment and yes, don’t feel left out if he starts talking about his job more in depth with other co-workers.
