Topic: The Club House / Newbie female working in male institution Squeeze, you may have it; it sure doesn’t work here! I don’t know what made our warden think it would work. It isn’t only inmates that swear like truckers; most of the staff does too. Oh well, it was good for a laugh. |

Topic: The Club House / Newbie female working in male institution Squeeze makes a good point. I don’t swear at the inmates and they don’t swear at me; I won’t allow it. Our institution has been declared a “profanity free zone”, which is a joke. People who grew up using profanity think nothing of it. The F-word has become common everyday language. I wasn’t raised with profanity so don’t use it in my everyday life either. |

Topic: The Club House / Starting Career in Corrections Giants2008, I was 35 when I started and will be 66 when I have my 30 in. This worked out perfect for the retirement requirements. I have more aches & pains, but intend to do the whole 30 before I retire. |

Topic: Everything Education / Informational Interview I hired in 22.5 years ago with a HS diploma. I now have a dual Associates in Corrections and a BS in Business Admin. Neither have helped me advance; I did that before I started college. Remember, unless you make a lifetime career in Corrections, a degree in CJ will not help when you decide to move into another line of work, unless it is law enforcement. Expand your horizons before making CJ your life. I was 35 when hired and will be 66 when I retire after 30 years. I intend to enjoy my retirement with a drink in one hand and a book in the other while lying on a warm beach, not looking for another career. |

Topic: The Club House / Looking For Advice When I called Alderson I was told if I was over 35 to not even apply. That is their cut off age and they had a 2 year waiting list of applicants. |

Topic: Health & Wellness / Correctional Staff and Their Unwillingness to Learn Defensive Tactics. In Ohio you can’t carry a firearm with a domestic charge on your record. We have to be firearms qualified yearly, so that would keep you out. |

Topic: Health & Wellness / Correctional Staff and Their Unwillingness to Learn Defensive Tactics. If I fell into option #2, I wouldn’t be working. I would be laying on a beach with a drink in my hand!! |

Topic: Health & Wellness / Correctional Staff and Their Unwillingness to Learn Defensive Tactics. I was an officer and am now a sergeant. I used my IPC skills and was able to disfuse situations that way. I worked the RTU unit for 2.5 years, and still never used force. It is possible. THINK before reacting. |
