Topic: Letter of The Law / # chances before drug offenders go to prison instead of rehab You could argue pedophilia, sociopathy and psychopathy are also diseases of the brain. Whether due to chemical imbalance, psychological or social issues, really depends on which side of the fence you come down on. Treatable or curable? I don’t think so. |

Topic: The Club House / The Academy: Getting Started Well I can’t speak for county corrections or jails, but in the state I work in you’re guranteed 40 hours a week. The problem after you’ve been doing this for 15 years is actually coming in for those 40 hours! |

Topic: Health & Wellness / Speaking of tv shows Has anyone seen Steve Austin’s Broken Skull Challenge!?!?!? Wow love it love it love it. It is a bit formulaic with physical challenges and all that, but great great tv. And Steve’s 1 liners…… priceless. |

Topic: A Broader View / Perception of Correctional staff While watching tv I’ve noticed a disturbing trend. I watch a pretty narrow scope of shows ie justified, sons of anarchy, and the bridge (just to name a few). On these shows they have featured parts that have been in correctional facilities. Every time they do they show corrections officers as dirty or corrupt, if not just completely incompetent. AND orange is the new black takes a giant crap all over our proffesion as well, if you’ve seen it then Mendez…… WTF!!!??? I understand that sensationalism sells and that stories about correctional staff being all of the things mentioned before surface on a regular. I mean if you’ve been doing this job for awhile then I’m sure you’ve got stories, we all do. My problem is that perception is reality to John Q Public. The sheep only know what they see and if all they see is negative then I am now a piece of dogcrap on the bottom of their shoe. If our taxpayers continually see us as bumbling sex crazed/deprived neanderthals then they’re gonna start using the powers of our republic and vote for change. Which is not good IMNSHO, because that means paycuts, higher premiums on healthcare and unionbusting. I’m fully aware that a show about working the locks and dealing with the every day correctional issues would not generate a lot of viewership. Not a lot of people would tune in to watch as I tell an inmate that no he may not leave the lock or that no he may not get an extra roll of toilet paper and maintain my proffesionalism as he acts entitled to whatever he wants and whenever he wants to do it. Or, when pat searching an inmate and he wants to tell me how he’s already been searched or that I’m just messing with him because of his race black or white!?!?!? I tell him that if he comes off the wall or turns again force will be used to protect myself, then when he comes of the wall and gets put on the ground and cuffed he plays the victim card. I then have to jump thru hoops to defend my actions and hope I’m not put on administrative leave. Meanwhile this inmate is here for a violent crime against humanity and has a history of being aggressive and violent towards staff, all of which I don’t find out until after I write the conduct report. I’m not whining or bemoaning my situation as a CO. I went looking for a job after I got out of the military and found a career. This job fits me quite nicely I do believe and I have no illusions about where I work or what I do. I realize it’s a thankless and undervalued position and that I’m locked in with murders, rapists, thieves and thugs. BUT if I make sure they stay here then my woman and children don’t have to worry about them out in society. And that to me is what it’s all about. AND if I don’t do it then who will? The sheep that judge my actions from afar and criticize me based on their perceptions….. |

Topic: Security Central / Alternative to cell extractions Gotta agree with Irish here. Best case scenario is they get talked out. When that fails O.C., pepperball and stingballs. If that doesn’t get the job done then someone has to go get them. Problem is when you get into confined space with a combative inmate things go a bit sideways sometimes. It is a nasty business we are in at times, guess that’s why we get paid the big $….. |

Topic: The Club House / Hospitalized Inmates getting visits? This may not be the best place to post something where your brother was going to commit statutory and then got caught. As a correctional professional and a father of 2 beautiful daughters you’ll get no sympathy here. |

Topic: Security Central / Is an inmate about to fight? They will lace up and remove clothing. The shirts come off to avoid the hockey fight scenario, shirt pulled over head and upper arms rendering them somewhat defenseless. When the area you are working becomes eerily quiet and that spidey sense starts tingling…. it’s time to get ready for trouble. Now, if an inmate is wanting to fight you then he may just “steal on you” or sucker punch you. Some will just posture and puff themselves up like peacocks letting everyone in the block know how bad they are. Others will not give you verbal cues and will let you know thru body language. |

Topic: The Club House / Subject matter experts All this wisdom from certain CO’s on here….. tell me one thing tho, how are you such an expert at all things corrections if you can’t stay awake on post? It may be that you’re up all night watching documetaries or researching corrections….. I mean expertly written posts and such a vast wealth of knowledge, BUT never touched an inmate beyond putting on cuffs AFTER the fact and or dispersing O.C. during a fight…. YET can’t stay awake for your shift….. hmmmmmm. “You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time” If this post doesn’t pertain to you then disregard. I can only take so much hypocrisy. |

Topic: The Club House / Contemplating becoming a co You can expect to be tested and you will run into things in your 1st week that have never happened to me in over 14 years on the job, because you’re a female. The more you learn while working in corrections the more confident you will be, it is up to you to determine what type of officer you will be. Pick up things from the officers you see that have their sh*t together, imitation is the highest form of flattery. You will see and hear things that will blow your mind, but after some time you will get desensitized to all the madness and accept that it’s par for the course. “Normal” is just a state of mind really… Knowing policies and procedures is the key, never give them anything more than what they have coming. Now, as far as physical fitness…. well let’s just say one would think if you locked yourself up with typically violent convicted felons for on average between 8 to 12 hours a day you’d put a premium on physical fitness. Sadly this is not the case. The assessments are generally a joke and the department I work for abolished them. As Mick said a lot of your days will be routine and somewhat boring, but those other days…….. ahhh those other days are what keep me coming back in here!!! |

Topic: The Club House / Inmate entitlement!?!? Well sadly we are in the times of inmate entitlement and that’s how the game is being played. When “quality of inmate life” is being pushed down your throat and negotiations are the norm there will be a lot of backlash from the corrections side of the house. You can’t have your all of the “bad people” locked in 1 place and expect smooth sailing. Personally I blame all of the hippies. We now live in a society where the wussification (PC) is almost complete. Don’t say do or think anything that will offend someone else, because we’re all just so damn sensitive now. There are times and places when the sword is not only mightier than the pen it’s the only option. Some of us that are considered neanderthals see the writing on the wall. We’ll stay in our cages until you need us, let’s just hope it’s not too late when you call… |

Topic: The Club House / What to Expect??? O_O Honestly tho, who gets on here just to take a shot at another individual via the internet!?!?! That would also fall into the definition of “pansy” in my book. This mostly anonymous forum is for those of us in corrections to communicate with one another and for a bit of peer support. Some that are not in the career field or the ones that are true believers in “REHABILITATION” will not ever understand what most of us converse about on here. What I do know is when those poor souls that are just trying to change and better themselves, but unfortunately caught a case, go into a murderous rage and\or riot I will be the one going in to handle it and regain control. I will be the one that willingly places myself in danger to help my brothers and sisters that need me. I do not crave or desire recognition, praise or accolades for this I will do it because it needs to be done and I’m trained and prepared for it. I have been off here for awhile and this is a response for a few different threads, but I didn’t feel like posting on all of them. The lazy CO coming out I suppose…… it is what it is. |

Topic: A Broader View / Again pulling a double (big money!) So, I’m kid of obsessed with the impending zombie apocalypse and read the books, watch the movies and t.v. shows. Since that genre is really a reflection of society and the de-evolution of mankind I personally think it fits the C.O. mentality perfectly. We see the absolute worst humanity has to offer. Now I know police have to be at the scene of these horrific crimes, but we get to watch them turn into something else. I know not all inmates are monsters, but……. |

Topic: The Club House / Inmate entitlement!?!? It is here. Inmates are holding segregation cells hostage, breaking sprinkler heads and arms out the cuffports and the usual. That is until they get phone calls or whatever they’re asking for. Then after the call……..right back to tearing up state property. |
