Topic: Security Central / Best way to handle unruly inmate

Never give an inmate something “just to make the problem go away.” We are paid to deal with the problem, not bury it. Give them what they have coming in accordance to policy such as hygiene items, toilet paper, writing materials. If we start giving in to make them happy, where does it stop?

Sorry about that. Anyway, they are subject to be searched at any time. I wonder what kind of person would conceive the notion that a CO would need a warrant. If the inmate doesn’t like being searched, then maybe he shouldn’t have engaged in conduct that brought him or her into the system.

I have been with BOP now for nearly 16 years. I have seven more to go and I have to retire. 57 is too young to retire, but that is what the law and OPM guidelines dictate. Do I like it? Heck no. If one is both physically and mentally able to perform the job at 57, it seems a shame the BOP tosses you aside like yesterdays trash. If I could stay until 62, I would jump at it. The BOP is quick to let experience go because of age. You would think that they would push for a change in the retirement age so as to keep the experience level high for a longer period. But I do know that there are some who can’t wait to hit the door, and thats fine. Not everyone is like that and its those who still want to work should in some way be afforded the opportunity to stay a little longer.

Topic: Security Central / Best way to handle unruly inmate

In nearly 20 years of doing this line of work, I still am amazed by how little some CO’s know about
problem solving and communicating with inmates. If you are a new CO, remember never lie to an inmate,(they will know) and keep your word. Inmates will respect you more if your a straight up CO and one who does their job. If you spend all your time in the officer station and never interact, how can you get to know your inmates and most importantly, how can you detect, or “feel” somethings wrong. Dealing with unruly inmates can be a challenge to any officer, whether a rookie or a seasoned officer. If you think you might need assistance, get on your radio and call for it. Any veteran CO can tell you backup is a good thing and calling for it is not a sign of being weak. Our goal is that we all go home at the end of the shift.

I always remember the old saying “Look before you leap.” Never go in blind. Always observe and assess. But most importantly, wait for assistance. Do your job, just remember we ain’t superheroes.
