Topic: Security Central / Transport security So do we Twelve. Usually the third officer is supervisor of some sort. We have varying degrees of transportation restraints as well. Our most secure prisoners wear the black box, a device designed by an ex prisoner that prevents anyone from picking the handcuffs. Pretty neat to see and relatively easy to apply. |

Topic: Everything Education / Reentry practices, concernsÂ…help? The Michigan Prisoner ReEntry Initiative, or MRPI, has really taken hold in the Michigan Dept. of Corrections. It is allowing the prisoners to begin a plan of reentry from the time they are incarcerated. The use of programs and various educational opportunities, combined with a collaborative case management in the parole and probation field create much more substantive gains in the sense of reducing recidivism. If interested, please contact our state website at www.mich.gov/corrections. |

Topic: The Club House / Do you belong to a Union? In Michigan, almost all of our employees are union. All corrections officers belong to a union, as well as probation and parole officers. The only staff that arent union protected are supervisors, administrators, and clerical staff. Maintenance workers also are not union protected. Our union mostly helps our case, but they do have a limited power in which to bargain for our contracts. We lost our cost of living raise for the fiscal year of 08-09. Our next cost of living raise wont take place until October of 09. With gas costs they way they are, we are not really pleased, but for the most part I would say that it helps. |

Topic: Security Central / Transport security Michigan corrections agencies utilize their own staff for hospital runs and medical trips. In the event there is less staff than necessary, we have transportation officers that work for the entire complexes and can cover if necessary. We also have a contract with the local ambulance provider and if necessary, it we will send two officers and reduce our movement until we are staffed appropriately. |
