Topic: A Broader View / should my daughter visit her mother in jail? is there a benefit to visiting? He says his daughter is 15 yrs old. So she is not a small child but a young woman I am sure capable of logical reasoning. As for the visiting Room I doubt a 15 yr old will need a “Child Friendly Play Area”. |

Topic: A Broader View / should my daughter visit her mother in jail? is there a benefit to visiting? If anything it would show your Daughter that jail is not like some TV shows. It’s not glamorous or a fun place to be. As for being intimidated by the Officers why should she be? Correctional Officers are just the same as ordinary people. They will be courteous and professional. And the other inmates would be having their own visits going on so I doubt they would pay any attention to your daughter. |

Topic: The Club House / Civilian Dating A CO Don’t do anything different than you would with anyone else. Just because we wear a uniform doesn’t make us some type of strange being LOL.. Just be patient about the shift work, that he may have to work on weekends and on nights may be a pain at times but just roll with it. The Job can be stressful but most of us dont bring that side home with us. Work is Work and Home is Home and never the twain shall meet. And if you are both out with some of his colleagues from work don’t feel left out if you don’t understand what he and they are talking about,Corrections is its own world with its own ways. |

Topic: A Broader View / Ohio DRC Hiring Freeze?? LOL you are asking about something that was 16 years ago. I remember thinking that the end of the 2 year probation period before becoming established was such a long way off. Inside on the floor is like nothing you will have experienced in your life. Prisons are a world of their own. They have their own language, rules and moral codes hence my reference to Alice in Wonderland. You will change, that is inevitable. It has happened to us all. You wont notice it but those that know you now will. You will become harder more cynical. This is not a bad thing in itself because inside it is survival instinct. As for the Academy that is just there to teach you the very basics. Your real training begins when you leave it and start in your prison. |

Topic: Letter of The Law / # chances before drug offenders go to prison instead of rehab Chrissy. It may have escaped your notice but Corrections have nothing to do with sentencing. We receive those that the Judiciary deem to have broken the law and have been sentenced to a term of imprisonment. So your rant on a Corrections forum is a wasted effort. |

Topic: The Club House / Hospitalized Inmates getting visits? jasoncom8984. In many cases of Prisoner Hospitalization its a matter of security. Unless your brother was diagnosed as terminally ill there is no onus on the Prison to contact any member of your family. They only had an onus to make contact because he died in custody. |

Topic: Security Central / Is an inmate about to fight? Much of it will come with experience. You will sense a tension in the air. It’s hard to explain. It’s a combination of many small things. Watch how the inmates are acting around one or more particular inmate, listen to inmate chatter,If you watch the senior Officers you would think that they are relaxed but you can be sure like a spider on a web they “Feel” the smallest change in the atmosphere around them. |

Topic: The Club House / Contemplating becoming a co The Oral board is like any interview. When I did it we had a Psychologist, a Warden and a senior Civil Servant conducting the interview. I don’t know what your Board would involve but I assume it would be similar. As for how long that depends on any number of factors from how many recruits they need and when fast they need them. |

Topic: A Broader View / The use of trustees To try and limit the flow of contraband we keep our trustees in a separate part of the prison to the General population. As Campi says there will always be a certain amount of contraband coming in. Intelligence has a big part to play in stifling the flow. Listening in on phone calls, using informants etc. |

Topic: The Club House / Contemplating becoming a co To the First Question. No you are not to Old but with us to get the full pension you must serve 30 years and mandatory retirement is at 60 but you would get about 3/4 of the full at 25 years. Secondly the majority of our time is routine and at times boring. It’s not like the movies or what you get to see in documentaries. Thirdly if you are reasonably fit (you don’t need to be an Olympic Athlete) you will be fine. And yes there is a physical assessment as part of the recruitment process. It is to see if you are physically capable of carrying out your duties. Eg: Responding to an alarm you may have to run across an exercise yard and up flight of stairs and help tackle an inmate. As for the academy yes everyone has to go through it. Its like basic training in the Military. It will teach you about how to deal with different situations with inmates, Self defence and how to restrain an inmate properly, the laws and regulations regarding inmates and working in corrections. As for shyness that wont be long in disappearing if you do join. A few years ago a colleague of mine joined. She was small shy and frightened to death of what the job entailed. Her circumstances were very much like yours. To see her today you would not think it was the same person. She is full of self confidence not in the least bit shy and its the inmates that are terrified of her. |

Topic: Letter of The Law / Armory Location HMB. Not to be critical but discussing this type of issue on a public forum is not a great idea. Discussing it amongst your peers in person is one thing but on an open forum is quite another. |

Topic: The Club House / Female going into corrections Very few of us go into this Job with full knowledge of what we are going into. This Job shapes you and your attitudes towards people. As Squeeze has said follow procedure and the rules and treat the inmates as to how they behave. As I said in a previous thread, think of us as Foster Parents to a bunch of unruly out of control (Adult) children and act accordingly. |

Topic: Security Central / Alternative to cell extractions Dave. There are a couple of problems with that idea. First off it could possibly kill the inmate. Secondly the cell would need to be relatively air tight most cells are not. Some institutions use OC spray to incapacitate an inmate others use an Electric Shield. All extraction techniques currently in use are specifically designed to restrain the inmate with the least chance of causing serious physical harm to the inmate. |

Topic: The Club House / Pretty Girls... New Hire TimD. We like the Police deal with societies underbelly. And that makes one rather callous and hard. You say we seem unique in the need to be Tough but Professional. But we are far from unique. All you have to do is look at any good parents and you will see the same thing. Think of like this. A set of Foster Parents have a house full of wild unruly kids. By necessity they need to use a firm hand to control them but the parents need to know that a firm hand by itself is not enough. They also have responsibilities to ensure the kids are cared for. That is the Job of a Corrections Officer but instead of a house full of unruly kids we have a Prison full of violent adults. |

Topic: The Club House / Pretty Girls... New Hire The main thing to remember Vasilisa is be the professional you are being trained to be. Firm but Fair is the mantra. Don’t try be a hard ass but don’t take any crap either. Most inmates have seen Officers of every kind come and go and they will tell you themselves that only one’s they respected were the ones that behaved in a professional manner towards them. |

Topic: Everything Education / Psych Eval If he thinks you drink to much he must be new to Corrections himself. Some of the Guys I work with are legendary. They don’t have an alcohol problem but they can drink like fish on a night out. I have seen them easily drink 18 to 20 Pints of Guinness and still be able to walk and talk in a reasonable manner. The attitude of many Corrections Officers as well as Police Officers, Fire Fighters and Paramedics is Work Hard Play Hard. Our Job can be stressful and a night out with the guys and girls that understand what the Job is like can be a great way to relax and let your hair down. |

Topic: The Club House / Pretty Girls... New Hire I have worked with some fantastic looking Female Officers and to be honest as long as they could do the Job the same as anyone else their attractiveness or lack of was not an issue. And if they cant see past your looks then they have some serious issues with their own policies. |
