At our facility porn is allowed but not photo’s of penetration. Of course we constantly find those, these folks are not in here becuase they’re great at following rules. Almost every cell has girlie pics all over them, even though the female CO’s find it very distateful. But then again we’re in the business of catering to inmates nowadays, or at least that’s what the government wants us to do now.

In our facility in Nebraska we do allow but currently do not offer porn magazines. I guess no one wants to donate them?! We would put inmate in the off camera room to view in private. Then when finished we would return them to their pods. Strange allowance. Only the C.Os know that we offer this so far inmates haven’t read our policy and procedure that’s the only place it’s published.

No adult publications, no mp3/cd players, no cell phones, they are lucky enough to get a book to read. Then it’s up to the CO as to what they read. I give ’em stuff like Architecture Digest, Crime and Punishment, War and Peace…

you are right, this is not a place to kick back and relax. Prison is not the Hilton. They don’t get cell phones or tobacco. We are even in the process of eliminating the compact disc players and are going to mp3 players so that we can control the music they listen to, ie ganster rap and cop killing music. Like i said earlier, This is not the Hilton, it is a prison

Hmm, No girlie magazines, no bomb making books, I bet you take their cell phones too.
Boy I tell you, the pursuit of happiness does not shine for those at your place.

at our facility we do not allow girlie magazines. Magazines are not a right to the inmates there for they are able to be controled by the facility. Just like the books that tell how to make bombs are not allowed.

Hey, Ant. I’m a CO with Ohio DRC.

I’m not at all familiar with the Supreme Court decision but agree that it’s interesting. Like you, I understand the idea behind the ruling but am not sure I agree with it. I don’t see a problem with the male inmates looking at pretty girls in a magazine and don’t see a problem with female inmates looking at hunky guys. Maybe I’m a throwback and can’t accept change. After all, “we’ve always done it that way”.

The SC decison falls under the category of “nice to know info” but doesn’t affect what I do at work. I have no input if the state decides to ban or not to ban specific girlie magazines, and if I were to make any comment about it the Major would comment something along the line that I’m thinking above my pay grade, if you knowhutimean. After all, I’m not one of the big wheels… I’m just a mudflap. : )

Hi Mudflap,

Thanks for the reply. if you don’t mind me asking, what state to you work in? Evidently, the U.S. Supreme Court came down with a ruling (I can’t believe they have time for some of this stuff) saying that prisons can constitutionally deny inmates magazines that have nudity because it poses a threat to female correctional officers. The ruling didn’t “command” the states to do this but said if they do then it’s not a violation of inmates civil rights… I’m not completely sure I agree with the ruling but I can understand the thinking behind it. Anyway, it’s just interesting to me.

Hi Ant. Welcome to the forums! I don’t work the mail room but my understanding is that we don’t allow “insertion”. I deliver inmate mail on second shift, and the inmates get several different “girlie mags”. Any magazine subscription or renewal has to be pre-approved by unit staff. In the last 12 months we’ve had two specific issues of two separate magazines that were banned… one had an article on how to make hooch and the other had an article about surviving in the woods. That second one was banned because it explained how to live off the land for a while, which (of course) would be handy information during an escape.

It seems every state is a little different when it comes to inmates having adult material… some states allow nude pictures and some states don’t allow magazines like FHM or Maxim. I would just like some thoughts on the subject and i would like to know what the policy is in your specific prisons…
