Article: Keefe Group has recently partnered with the Big Brothers Big Sisters Amachi Program to sponsor mentors for children of incarcerated parents. In the United States today, there are approximately 2.4 million children who have a parent in prison. Unfortunately, the children of incarcerated parents are often at high risk of one day becoming imprisoned themselves. Research shows that up to 70% of these children are likely to enter the correctional system unless they get the positive intervention they need. Through the Big Brothers Big Sisters Amachi Program, an opportunity exists to break the cycle of incarceration and with Keefe's sponsorship, provide responsible adult mentors for children of incarcerated parents. Because they have someone to confide in and look up to, children with a mentor tend to do better at school and at home. They are more likely to avoid violence and substance abuse, and have shown impressive improvements in self-confidence and attitude. Essentially, mentors, like those sponsored by Keefe, could positively affect the course of a child's future. For more than one hundred years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been one of the most effective youth-service groups in the United States. It is the oldest and largest mentoring organization in the country, serving young people nationwide. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri, a proud member of the United Way, carries out this vital mission throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area.
